As an undergraduate at Sargent, Mildred Barnes rapidly established herself "as an outstanding athlete with great potential," according to Gretchen Schuyler, who was her coach at the time. Millie competed in volleyball, basketball, fistball, field hockey, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis and badminton.

She represented Boston University in the National Intercollegiate Tennis Championships in 1949 and held the National Class C badminton doubles title in 1950 and 1951. She was named to the United States Lacrosse team five times and as a senior represented the United States on the first American team ever to tie Great Britain.

Following the successful completion of her Doctoral program at the University's School of Education, Dr. Barnes joined the faculty of University of Iowa as a full professor of physical education. She is the author of numerous books on sports and is regarded as an authority on women's sports.

In 1975, Dr. Barnes was the chief of delegation and manager of the United States National Basketball team for the World Games and Pan American games, and held the same post for the World Games in 1976.
