Women's Crew Defeats Dartmouth And Yale
April 10, 1999 | Women's Rowing
The Boston University women's varsity heavyweight crew rowed a "gutsy" race, according to head coach Holly Hatton en route to a win over Dartmouth and Yale on The Charles River on Saturday (April 10th). The win enabled the Terriers to improve their spring record to 2-1.
B.U. was timed in 6:44.8 over the 2000-meter course, while Dartmouth was second in 6:54.2 and Yale was third in 6:58.1.
The Terriers also won their second varsity race over Dartmouth and Yale with a time of 7:07.9, more than five seconds faster than Dartmouth (7:13.0) and 18 seconds faster than Yale (7:26.1). However, B.U. lost a heartbreaking decision to Yale in the first freshman race as the Elis were timed in 7:02.1, just one-tenth-of-a-second faster than the Terriers (7:02.2). Dartmouth was third in 7:07.3.
In the varsity heavyweight race, the Terriers led throughout, as they met each of Dartmouth's challenges along the course.
"It was a real gutsy performance by our boat," commented Coach Hatton. "Dartmouth challenged a few times during the race, and we responded each time."
The Terriers took the lead off the start and settled in at 33-and-one-half strokes a minute. By the time the race had reached the 1000-meter mark, Dartmouth had pulled to within two seats. However, the Terriers answered the challenge and opened the lead to four seats.
Again, the Big Green made a move at 1500 meters, closing to within a couple of seats, but again, the Terriers met the challenge. Finally, with a couple of hundred meters left in the race, Dartmouth tried to overcome the deficit. However, the rower in the four-seat pulled a crab that knocked her from her seat, and the Terriers rowed the final 100 meters with no challenge.
Even so, by then, the Terriers had assured themselves the win.
"Our boat is really coming together," said a pleased Coach Hatton. "There is unity and a spirit on this team that I really like. You can coach technique, but you can't coach spirit, and that's what this boat has.
"We are not a big boat," continued the coach. "Our rowers weigh 135 or 140 pounds. Nowadays, the big boats have rowers who weight 170 pounds. But, I like the spirit of our rowers.
"A win like today is important not just because it was a victory but also the way we won it," said the coach. "We showed we could respond to a challenge from another boat.
"This will give us confidence as we head into the toughest part of our schedule," concluded the coach.
