Women Row "Awesome" Race In Losing Effort To Radcliffe
May 1, 1999 | Women's Rowing
The women's varsity crew performed beyond head coach Holly Hatton's expectations on Saturday even though the Terriers lost to Radcliffe in the second annual Allen/DeWolfe Cup Regatta on The Charles River. Radcliffe was timed in 6:30.5, while B.U. covered the 2000-meter course in 6:31.6. MIT was a distant third in 7:13.2. The Cup is named jointly after B.U. graduate Dick DeWolfe and Harvard graduate Clint Allen. It should be noted that the Terriers' new boathouse, which is expected to be completed by this September, is also named after the DeWolfe family. A week ago, B.U. looked flat in losing to Northeastern and Wisconsin, and Hatton had no idea what to expect against Radcliffe as the Terriers closed out the regular-season regatta. B.U. is off now until May 16th when they compete in the Eastern Sprints in Kent, CT. "If we can remain contact with them (Radcliffe), then I will be happy," said Hatton, who had coached the Radcliffe novice crew until she took over the head coaching responsibilities of the Terriers in 1997. The Terriers did more than that against Radcliffe, which came in the race ranked fourth in the recent poll of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges. In the meantime, the Terriers were ranked 13th. "We rowed an awesome race," lauded Hatton. "It was a real gutsy performance by our varsity. "We had met on Friday night to talk about this race," said the coach. "I told them that they were rowing well technically. It was now a question of being mentally ready." The race had to be restarted as both Radcliffe and MIT got off to a false start. Once the race did get underway, Radcliffe jumped off to an early lead, but the Terriers kept in contact and trailed by just five seats midway through the race. The lead never reached more than a length, and, then with 500 meters to go, B.U. made a big move but came up just short at the finish. "We really needed this effort to help our confidence," said Hatton. "The loss to Northeastern really pulled us down, and now we have two weeks to get ready for the sprints. "I really didn't know what to expect today," continued the coach. "We didn't have a good week of practice, but, this morning, everyone seemed upbeat." And, it translated into an outstanding performance by the varsity. The Terriers did not row as well in the second varsity, losing by 13 seconds. However, the novice boat did an excellent job, outdistancing Radcliffe, 6:58.2 to 7:05.7. In each case, MIT was third. Tech was timed in 7:20. 7 in the second varsity and 7:28.7 in the novice race.
