Women's Crews Remain Undefeated
April 1, 2000 | Women's Rowing
The Terrier women's crews remained undefeated on Saturday (April 1st) as they rowed to wins over Syracuse and the University of Miami in the first and second varsity heavyweight races and over Syracuse in the first freshmen event.
The wins improved B.U.'s record this spring to 2-0, as the women defeated UMass/Amherst and New Hampshire the week before (March 25th).
Against Syracuse and Miami, the Terriers' first varsity boat overcame its second slow start in two weeks to defeat runnerup Syracuse, 6:59.6 to 7:06.00. Miami finished about half a length behind in 7:08.3.
"We rowed better today (April 1st) than we did last week," said Terrier women's coach Holly Hatton. "But, we still need to be more explosive off the start. We weren't fast enough off the start. We are getting better, but we are not there yet."
Miami took the lead in the opening strokes of the race before the Terriers made their move. By the 1000-meter mark, B.U. had a lead of about three seats.
While Miami and Syracuse were settling in a 35 and 36 strokes a minute, the Terriers showed a longer stroke and rowed at 32 and-a-half strokes a minute.
The race left little in doubt by the time the boats reached the 1250-meter mark as the Terriers had a lead of a boat length. Shortly thereafter, they had open water and that's the way it remained the final 500 meters.
However, with tougher boats to race the rest of the season, the Terriers still need to work on their speed.
"If we want to be up with the top dogs, we need more speed."
The second varsity pulled ahead in the opening 500 meters of its race and went on to enjoy an eight-second win over Miami, 7:23.3 to 7:31.5. Syracuse was third in 7:35.9.
"The 2V race today unfolded better than a week ago," said Hatton. "Last week, they sat in one position for the first 1000. Today, they rowed a more progressive race. They had a good row in practice yesterday (Friday).
"This boat has to be focused when they row," continued the coach. "We have lost some key people through injuries, and, as a result, there is no room for error for this boat."
There were no errors for them against Syracuse and Miami.
The most impressive performance was put on by the first freshman boat.
A week ago, they disposed of UMass and New Hampshire easily, and the same was true against Syracuse. B.U. was timed in 7:20.4 over the 2000 meter course. Syracuse was more than 20 seconds behind in 7:40.7. Miami did not have a boat entered.
"Our freshmen are rowing very well," said Hatton. "I would like to keep this boat together for the entire season, but we will have to see what happens with the varsity boat as far as their ability to get faster."
