Women's Crew Drops First Regatta Of Season
April 15, 2000 | Women's Rowing
DERBY, CT. - The Terrier women's varsity crew, ranked number eight in last week's (April 12) Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing National Collegiate Coaches Poll, suffered its first regatta loss of the spring season on Saturday, April 15.
Rowing against both Dartmouth and Yale in Derby, CT, the varsity finished less than four seconds behind Yale, 6:20.6 to 6:24.4, respective. Dartmouth was third in 6:30.8.
B.U. had opened the season with regatta wins over UMass/Amherst and New Hampshire on March 25th, over Syracuse and Miami on April 1st, and over George Washington and Navy on April 8th.
The three-win performance earned the Terriers their eighth-place spot in the weekly rankings.
In the meantime, Yale was ranked 12th while Dartmouth was just shy of making the top 20 as it was listed among "others receiving votes." Rowing on flat water, with an occasional light breeze and a slight tail current, the Terriers battled Yale through the first 1000 meters of the 2000-meter course.
At that point, Yale made a move, but the Terriers could not meet the challenge. They fell behind and never managed to catch the Yale boat.
"We did not row well," said Terrier varsity coach Holly Hatton. "We were not able to answer what Yale did. We did not do what we needed to do and that was very disappointing."
That was not the case in the other five races of the day, as the Terriers swept all five.
Tops among the group were the second varsity and first freshmen that improved their records to 5-0.
The second varsity was timed in 6:41.0, while Yale was second in 6:51.4 and Dartmouth was third in 6:56.8.
In the meantime, the first freshmen were clocked in 6:31.8. Dartmouth was second in 6:37.4, and Yale was third in 6:45.6.
"Both boats continued to do a great job," said Hatton.
In other races, the third varsity 4-plus rowed a 7:17.2. Yale was second in 7:30.5 followed by Dartmouth in 7:42.6. The second novice outrowed Dartmouth, 7:01.7 to 7:07.4, while Yale did not have a boat entered. Finally, in the Novice 4's, the Terriers third novice had a 7:38, while Yale's second novice had a 7:46.
