Terriers finish second at Iona Meet of Champions

Graduate student Rachel Felton (St. Albans, England) and junior Bolpar Vinh (Kingston, ONT) led the Terrier women's cross country team to an impressive second-place finish in the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Van Cordlandt Park in New York City.
Jochen Dieckfoss's eighth-place finish in a time of 25:14.0 propelled the men's squad to their ninth-place finish. Diekfoss (Tubingen, Germany), who took first in a meet two weeks ago at Franklin Park, finished in a time of 25:14.0, less than a half a minute behind meet champion Tom McArdle of Dartmouth (24:42.9).
Felton finished 10th on the women's side with a time of 21:11.9, while Vinh came in two seconds later to finish 13th at 21:13.8.
The Terriers came into the meet ranked 23rd in the NCAA poll. The Meet of Champions pitted B.U. against teams such as seventh-ranked Yale, 12th-ranked Boston College, and 20th-ranked Villanova . Overall 22 teams took part in the meet.
Three B. U. runners placed in the top 35 finishers. In the field of 238 runners, junior Sherida Brid (Prescott, AZ) finished 22nd, senior Jennifer Kehoe (London, ONT) came in 31st, and senior co-captain Lauren Matthews (Brookline, MA) was 34th.
The women's team scored 109 overall points, second only to Boston College, who won with 31 points. Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth, Villanova, Michigan, Brown, and Harvard rounded up the top 10.
Behind Diekfoss for the men were junior Liam Revell (Belleville, ONT) at 44th place in 25:58.4, senior Paul Ryan (Waltham, VT) at 58th place in 26:08.7, and junior Jordan Jones (Medford, MA) at 74th place in 26:19.0.
The men totaled 259 points, 37 points ahead of tenth-place finisher B.C., and 178 points behind meet champion Dartmouth, who won with 81 points behind two top-ten finishers.
The Terriers will face many of the same teams in their next competition at the Pre-National Meet on October 13 in Greensville, South Carolina.
