April 28, 2002 | Women's Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Kathleen Chen (Hamilton, MA) set a Boston University mark in the javelin throw, hitting 137'2" at the 2002 Penn Relays held in Philadelphia from April 25-27. The Terriers also had a number of relay teams that performed well at the Relays.
Chen broke B. U.'s old javelin mark of 127'6", set by Tempi Thompsin in 1984 at the Greater Boston Championship. She won the high school New England title in 2000, but did not throw as a freshman in 2001. She picked up the event again this season and has been improving from meet to meet.
Other Terriers performed well at the Penn Relays, including the sprint medley team of Pamela Pierre (27.1), Mary Ellen Bingham (27.4), Lauren Warman (56.9), and Rachel Felton (2:11.4), which combined to run 4:03.47, good enough for fifth in its heat.
On Saturday, Briana Neault (2:14.9), Sophie Melief (2:18.7), Julia Nazzer (2:17.5), and Caroline Occean (2:13.7) teamed up for a second place finish in the 4x800, with a time of 9:05.28.
In Thursday's 4x400, the relay team of Pierre (61.3), Nazzer (61.6), Warman (58.6), and Melief (60.8) combined to run a 4:02.60 to place sixth in their heat.
After their successful trip to the Penn Relays, the Terriers will prepare for the America East Championship, to be held at New Hampshire on Saturday, May 4.
