Women's Varsity 4 Highlight Rowing Team At Sprints
May 10, 2002 | Women's Rowing
The Terrier women's third varsity four "A" crew finished fifth in the grand finals to highlight the rowing team's performance at the EAWRC Sprints that were held on Sunday (May 12th) on the Cooper River in Trenton, NJ.
The boat, which was seeded fifth in the coaches' poll entering the Sprints, rowed the course in 7:48.80, 30 seconds behind Wisconsin. The Badgers, who were seeded ninth, surprised the entire field with a winning time of 7:18.40. Princeton, which had been seeded second, finished second in 7:22.80. Top-seeded Cornell was third in 7:27.20, followed by fourth-seeded Virginia in 7:31.00. Yale, which was seeded sixth based on the final poll, finished behind the Terriers in 7:53.20.
One of the disappointing parts of the day for the Terriers was the final standing of the heavyweight eight. Seeded seventh, the boat finished fifth in the morning heat with a time of 7:13.96. They trailed Brown (6:51.00), Virginia (6:56.90), Wisconsin (7:05.40), and Navy (7:11.34). With Brown and Virginia advancing to the grand finals, and Wisconsin and Navy qualifying for the petite finals, it left the Terriers in the third level finals. There, they finished first in 6:39.50, while they were 13th overall. As a measure of consolation for the varsity, Brown, which won the morning heat, went on to win the grand finals in 6:21.10
The open novice eight also won its third level varsity event. As was the case with the varsity boat, the novices were fifth in their morning heat and went on to defeat Rutgers, Columbia, and George Washington in the third level event. Their afternoon time was 7:09.35 as they finished 14th overall.
The second varsity eight, which was seeded sixth in the poll, finished third in its morning heat in a time of 7:08.10 and thus advanced to the petite finals in the afternoon. Racing against Wisconsin, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Penn, the Terriers took sixth in the Petites with a time of 7:54.80. Their overall finish was 11th.
The second novice eight, which was seeded 10th, finished fifth in the petite finals after finishing third in its morning heat. In the afternoon racing, the Terriers were timed in 6:52.20, as they finished 11th overall.
Finally, the open third varsity "B" boat finished fifth overall as did the "A" boat. The "B" finished in 8:27.00, but their points did not count toward the overall team scoring battle.
Competing for the Willing Point Trophy, the Terriers had a combined total of 30 points, tying them with Dartmouth for 11th place. Princeton won the trophy with 71 points. Point totals are awarded based on the school's final standings in the open varsity Eights, second varsity Eights, the open novice Eights, the second novice Eights, and the open varsity fours "A."
