Three Women Rowers Named To All-Region Team
June 11, 2002 | Women's Rowing
Terrier seniors Hillary Hegener (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Maeve Schulz (Cincinnati, OH) were named First Team All-New England Region, while junior Kari Oversvee (Everett, WA) was named Second Team in the fourth annual Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Region awards announced today.
The All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the rowing season. The nomination criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by the athlete's respective institution, participation in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the varsity boat, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA. A maximum of four athletes per institution may be nominated
From the list of nominees, a maximum of 12 rowers and one coxswain may be named to the first and second team for each region. Members of the All-Region teams are selected by the CRCA head coaches based on the nominee's team record, strength of schedule, nomination rank, coach's comments, and 2,000-meter ergometer score.
In all, rowers from five regions were honored-New England, Mid-Atlantic, Central, South, and West.
During the past season, the Terriers compiled a 5-5 record and finished 11th of 18 teams at the Eastern Sprints.
Shultz, who coxed the varsity boat the entire season, was the only coxswain named to either the first or second New England Region team.
Hegener was one of 11 rowers named to the Region First Team. During the season, Hegener was involved in a major lineup change by head coach Holly Hatton. For the first three years of her collegiate career, Hegener sat in the back of the boat and was in the bow seat when the Terriers opened their 2002 spring season. Then, in the third week of the season, she was moved to the six seat where she remained until just three days before the Brown regatta on April 20th. At that point, Hatton, who was still looking for more speed from her boat, moved Hegener to the stroke where she remained for the final three regular-season regattas and the Eastern Sprints.
Oversvee, a three-year veteran, rowed just behind Hegener in the seven seat at the Sprints.
The All-America first and second teams will be selected by the Regional Chairpersons from the rowers who have received first team honors. The All-America team will be announced later this summer.
