SYRACUSE, NY-The Terrier women's crew opened its spring season on a high note by sweeping both host Syracuse University and Duke University in the first and second varsity races along with the varsity four and novice eight.
The win over Duke gave the Terriers the Kittell Cup.
Rowing on a light choppy Onondaga Lake water and with a slight to moderate tail wind, the Terriers' varsity eight completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:12.4, almost five seconds ahead of Syracuse, which was timed in 6:17.3. The Duke women finished third in 6:21.9.
The second varsity took first in its event with a time of 6:42.7. Duke finished second in 6:46.6 and Syracuse placed third, almost nine seconds behind the Terriers at 6:51.3.
B.U.'s dominance continued in the varsity four event, as the Terriers finished the race in 7:24.1, outstroking Duke University (7:39.4) by nearly 15 seconds. Syracuse came in third with a time of 7:40.0.
B.U.'s freshman squad got in on the action, earning first and second places in the novice eight race. B.U.'s "A" boat completed the race in 6:51.2 and the "B" boat in 7:03.2. Syracuse finished third at 7:05.7.
The Terriers took second place in the second varsity four race with a time of 7:39.0. Syracuse crossed the finish line first, in 7:27.6. Duke came in third at 8:21.8.
"This was a terrific win for us," said Terrier varsity coach Holly Hatton. "A week ago, Duke had opened its season with a win over Texas, which was ranked number 13. In last week's poll, we were ranked 16th, while Syracuse was 17th, and Duke was 18th.
"It was excellent that all our boats did well for consideration for a team bid to the NCAA Championship," concluded the coach.
Next up, the Terrier women will compete against George Washington University, Navy and Georgetown University on April 5.
