Women Split With Yale And Dartmouth While Novice Win
April 10, 2004 | Women's Rowing
HANOVER, NH-Rowing on the Connecticut River that had small pieces of icebergs along the 2000-meter course, the Terrier women's varsity crew lost to Yale but beat host Dartmouth in a three-boat regatta on Saturday, April 10.
The women covered the 2000-meter course in 6:50.8, less than four seconds behind the Elis, who were timed in 6:46. Dartmouth trailed in 7:03.6.
The Terriers also finished second to Yale in the second varsity, 7:26.9 to 7:40.2, while Dartmouth was third in 7:54.3.
In the novice races, the Terriers prevailed headed by the first novice boat, which outrowed both Dartmouth and Yale. The Terriers were timed in 7:02.3 to 7:06.4 for the Big Green and 7:14.7 for the Elis.
Ice figured in both the going and the coming for the varsity boat. Going to the starting lineup, the boat was slightly damaged when it hit a piece of ice. Then, during the course of the race, it had to steer away from another piece of ice to avoid another mishap.
"I am not sure the ice made a big difference," said head coach Holly Hatton. "I think that for the most part the conditions were fair.
"Both the first and second varsity boats got off to great starts and rowed well for the first 1000 meters," Hatton continued. "At that point, we hit a wall of wind, and we were not able to respond. Yale moved ahead and we were not able to counter.
"We have a very young boat," pointed out the coach. "In fact, our stroke, Lauren Priest, is only a freshman. She is learning as she goes, and she just needs more experience.
"As far as the second varsity is concerned, they rowed better than last week," Hatton concluded.
