Women's Crews Win Morning, Afternoon Regattas
April 3, 2004 | Women's Rowing
WASHINGTON, DC-The Terrier women's crews won seven-of-eight races en route to defeating George Washington and Navy in the morning and Georgetown in the afternoon in two regattas staged on the Potomac River today (April 3).
"It was a good day for the crews," said head coach Holly Hatton. "In all the races, our crews came from lane one, and because of the strong currents and tailwind, the crews in the other lanes got off to a quicker start.
"As a result, we had to come from behind," continued the coach. "And, we showed good poise in being able to row through the crews ahead of us."
The morning regatta would have been for the Virginia Playfair Trophy, which is named after the grandmother of former Terrier rower Sara Fields. Sara's father, Mike Field, who is an assistant provost at Boston University, donated the Cup. However, the Navy varsity crew was in San Diego, and, as a result, the Playfair Trophy will be presented after the varsity races at the Eastern Sprints. There, the Terriers, George Washington, and Navy will be entered.
In the first varsity race, the Terriers were clocked in 5:43, while George Washington covered the 2,000-meter course in 5:45.
The second varsity race was the only one during the day that the Terriers did not win, and they were just three seconds behind Navy, 5:51 to 5:54. George Washington was third in 5:58.
B.U. won both the first and second novice races. In the first novice, B.U. rowed in 5:54 to 6:07 for Navy, and 6:52 for George Washington. Finally, in the second novice, the Terriers finished ahead of both runnerup Navy and third-place George Washington. There was no official time kept, but Navy finished 5.4 seconds behind the Terriers, while GW trailed by 7.4 seconds.
In the afternoon racing, the Terriers swept all four races against Georgetown. In the featured varsity race, the Terriers were clocked in 5:23 to give an indication of just how strong the tailwind and currents were. Georgetown was second in 5:40.
In the second varsity, the Terriers bested Georgetown by two seconds, 5:43 to 5:45, while the margin was three seconds in the second novice. The Terriers rowed in 6:07 to 6:10 for the Georgetown "A" boat. The Hoyas' "B" boat rowed in 6:22. Finally, in the first novice, the Terriers finished the course in 6:07 to 6:10 for Georgetown.
