The Terrier women's crew closed out its regular season on Saturday, May 1, as it lost to Radcliffe but beat MIT for the Allen-DeWolfe Trophy on the Charles River.
The Terriers, who will travel to Camden, NJ next weekend for the annual EAWRC Eastern Sprints, gave Radcliffe a lead from the start and could never regroup as it lost by open water to the Black and White. MIT finished a distant third.
Rowing into a headwind that was particularly strong through the first 1000 meters, the Terriers were timed in 7:17.1, while Radcliffe covered the 2000-meter course in 7:06.7. MIT finished in 8:01.8.
Radcliffe, the defending national champion, got off to a quick start. Ranked number eight in the USRowing national poll and fourth in the EAWRC rankings this week, Radcliffe got off to a quick start and was rowing at 36 strokes a minute through the first 500 meters. In the meantime, the Terriers, who are ranked 17th in the nation and sixth in the EAWRC polls this past week, were rowing at 34 strokes a minute.
By the time the crews had reached the 1000-meter mark, Radcliffe led by open water and extended its lead during the second half of the race.
"I really thought we would have given them a better race," Terrier head coach Holly Hatton said. "I made a change in our lineup last night, and the boat was really rowing well. It's just a question of our not being able to manage on race day what we do in practice.
"It's another case of my being disappointed," concluded Hatton. "We are just going to have to regroup and gain confidence."
On the bright side, the first novice won its race by nearly six seconds over Harvard and more than 20 seconds over MIT. The Terriers were timed in 7:41.6 to 7:47.5 for Harvard and 8:03.26 for MIT.
In the second varsity race, Radcliffe defeated the Terriers, 7:23.2 to 7:26.8. MIT did not have a second varsity boat. Instead, the Radcliffe lightweights competed, and they finished third in 7:31.8.
