May 9, 2004 | Women's Rowing
CAMDEN, NJ-The varsity and second varsity crews put on solid performances to highlight the Terriers' team effort at the Women's Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 9, on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
Both crews advanced to the grand finals after good rows in the morning heats. Then, in the finals, the varsity boat, which had been seeded sixth, finished fifth, while the second varsity, seeded eighth, also took fifth. In both cases, they were the first non-Ivy League boats to cross the finish line after the 2,000-meter race.
The varsity turned in a time of 6:32.54, which placed them behind top-seeded Princeton (6:16.10), Radcliffe (6:17.10), Yale (6:19.57), and Brown (6:20.14). Northeastern finished nearly eight seconds behind the Terriers with a time of 6:40.30.
In the meantime, the second varsity was clocked in 6:49.42. The same four crews that led the way in the varsity event, also were the top four crews in the second varsity race. They just finished in a different order. Brown led the way with a time 6:31.02, followed, in order, by Yale (6:35.53), Princeton (6:39.33), and Radcliffe (6:43.36). Cornell rounded out the grand final as the Big Red was sixth in 6:50.11.
"I am very pleased with how the two crews rowed," said Terrier head coach Holly Hatton. "I had hoped that both would qualify for the grand finals and finish fifth, and they both did. I am very pleased with the solid performances by both boats.
"This should certainly help us in consideration for a team bid for the NCAAs," the coach continued. "There is still a lot or rowing left next weekend with crews from the South Central and West Coast Regions. So, we will have to wait and see what happens."
The Terriers' best finish at the Sprints was in the second novice event where the B.U. boat earned a bronze medal by virtue of its third-place finish. The Terriers' time of 7:11.55 trailed only Brown (6:48.99) and Princeton (6:59.08).
In the open third varsity four, the Terriers won the petite finals with a time of 7:48.60. Syracuse was second in 7:54.37. Cornell won the grand finals in the event with a time of 7:23.73. B.U. also had a boat entered in the open third varsity four "B", and, here the Terriers finished fifth in 8:11.80. Cornell again led the way with a time of 7:48.80.
Finally, in the open novice eight, the Terriers were second in the petites and eighth overall. Northeastern won the petites in 6:54.82 to the Terriers' 6:58.89. Princeton won the grand finals with a time of 6:33.75.
As a team, the Terriers finished with 50 points, tying Cornell for fourth in the final standings for the Willing Point Trophy. Brown edged out Princeton, 67-66, for the trophy, while Radcliffe was third with 59 points.
