Cartwright Named Terrier Women's Novice Crew Coach
August 4, 2004 | Women's Rowing
Heather Cartwright, who coached the Princeton women's second varsity boat to a medal at the 2004 Eastern Sprints, has been named the Terrier Novice Crew Coach by B.U. head coach Holly Hatton.
A veteran of 12 years of coaching, Cartwright guided the Princeton second varsity eight to a bronze medal at this year's Eastern Sprints. In addition, her third varsity four took 10th at the NCAA Championships.
A native of Canada, Cartwright began rowing at Branksome Hall, Toronto, in 1985, and continued at the University of Western Ontario under Al Morrow, who is the head coach of the Canadian National Women's Rowing Team. As a rower, Cartwright won gold medals at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, the Canadian National Championships, the Ontario University Championships, and the Dad Vail Regatta.
An aspiring elite athlete, her rowing career came to an abrupt end in her junior year due to a rare genetic heart condition. At the encouragement of her coach, Cartwright became coach of the varsity lightweight women's program while still at university, leading them in her senior year to gold medals at the Ontario University Championships and the Dad Vail Regatta.
Upon graduation from Western in 1993 with a degree in English Literature, Cartwright attended film school and began a 10-year career in the internet and communications industries, co-owning a company prior to its sale in 2002. As an entrepreneur, Heather remains active in business as a director of two private investment companies.
In addition to university-level coaching, Heather has volunteer coached at the high school, club, and provincial levels since 1993. She has coached women's crews to gold medal finishes at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, the US Nationals, the Ontario Championships, the Head of the Charles, and Canada Cup. In 1992, she was the manager for the Canadian team at the World Rowing Championships in Montreal, and, in 1998, she served as an apprentice coach to the Canadian National Team on their European tour.
Heather is a Certified Level 4 coach, graduating from the National Coaching Institute, Ontario in 2004. She is past Chair of the Women in Rowing Committee for Rowing Canada and an active fundraiser for the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, and St. Michaels Hospital, Toronto.
