
BU Rowing Teams to Compete in Head of the Charles

BOSTON - The men???s and women???s rowing teams will join more than 7,000 rowers from around the world in the annual Head of the Charles Regatta that will be staged on Saturday (Oct. 22) and Sunday (Oct. 23). The two-day regatta has grown into the world???s largest two-day rowing event.
A total of 24 different races will take place over the three-mile Charles River course that begins at the Terriers??? DeWolfe Boathouse and ends at Herter Park. The Regatta, which grew from a one-day to a two-day event in 1997, is expected to attract more than 300,000 spectators.
The first action for a Terrier boat will be on Saturday at 12:33 p.m. when the men???s Club Eight boat comprised of freshmen and third varsity rowers will take off from the starting line.
The bulk of the action for the men???s and women???s crews will take place on Sunday.
At 10:55 a.m., the men???s Youth Four, which will include only freshmen, will row, while at 2:36 p.m., two junior varsity Fours will be entered in the Championship Four event. Then, finally, the varsity eight boat will compete in the Championship Eight race at 3:41 p.m.
The women will have three boats entered, and all three will row on Sunday. The Youth Four will start at 11:11 a.m., followed by the Championship Four at 2:48 p.m. and the Championship Eight at 3:57 p.m.
The weekend???s activities will also include dedications of three boats at the DeWolfe Boathouse. The festivities will be held on Saturday beginning at 6:00 p.m. All three boats being dedicated will be Eights, with two for the women and one for the men???s program.
The founders of the women???s crew program will dedicate ???For Our Daughters???, while long-time women???s crew benefactor David Jay will dedicate ???The Good Dip???. In the meantime, the men will dedicate an Eight in memory of H.H. ???Moe??? Mowatt, who captained the 1948 Terrier men???s crew. His widow, Daphne, and daughter, Twig, are expected to be on hand for the ceremony. Mowatt is well-known in rowing circles as there is a Cup in his name presented at the Head of the Charles of the winner of the Men???s Grand Master Singles event.
