Terriers Have Strong Showing at 41st Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University rowing squads took to the water this weekend in the 41st Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest two-day rowing event in the world. The top finish for the the women came in the Championship Fours race, where BU earned a third-place finish out of 18 boats, while the Terriers' women's varsity boat finished 11th out of 47 boats in the Championship Eight event. The men's varsity eight boat took 12th place out of a 40-boat field and the BU freshmen men's boat came through with the best performance of the weekend, crossing the finish line first in the 43-boat Youth Fours race.
In the Championship Fours, the BU women were only bested by the University of Victoria and Brown, while they beat out boats from Princeton, Tulsa, Texas, Yale and Michigan, with a time of 19:42.580.
The women's varsity eight turned in a time of 17:31.693, just behind boats from Washington State and Brown and ahead of crews from Tennessee, Columbia, Minnesota, Dartmouth and Duke.
The Terriers finished the men's Championship Eights race in a time of 15:24.096, just behind teams from Yale, Navy and Wisconsin, while crossing the line ahead of Syracuse and Harvard. Princeton became the first boat from a U.S. university to win the Championship Eights race in 22 years.
Starting from the eighth bow, the BU men's boat in the Youth Fours race took the lead at the third checkpoint and never looked back, finishing in 18:43.473, just under six seconds ahead of second-place Princeton. In the women's Youth Fours, BU turned in a solid 10th-place finish among 47 boats with a time of 22:17.292.
BU entered two boats in the men's Championship Fours race and finished 15th (17:57.435) and 25th (19:05.587). In the Club Fours race, BU alumni had an entry and finished in an impressive time of 17:51.622, good for fifth place in a 38-boat field.
On Saturday, the men's third varsity eight participated in the Club Eights race and was 15th among 50 boats in a time of 16:17.625.
Regatta organizers estimated a Sunday attendance of 118,000 and a two-day attendance of 201,000.
