
BU to Host 2009 Women's Frozen Four

BOSTON ??? The NCAA Women???s Ice Hockey Committee announced on Monday that Boston University will host the 2009 NCAA Women???s Frozen Four. The prestigious event will be held March 20-22 on the BU campus in the new state-of-the-art Agganis Arena.
With Terrier women???s ice hockey currently in its inaugural season at the NCAA Division I level, Boston University will be hosting the event for the first time. Although the women???s championship will be coming to BU for the first time, the University has played host to the Men???s Frozen Four on multiple occasions, most recently in 2004 at the FleetCenter (now TD Banknorth Garden).
???Being awarded the 2009 NCAA Women???s Frozen Four is yet another step forward for Boston University Athletics and the new women???s ice hockey program,??? said Mike Lynch, Boston University???s director of athletics. ???As the Terrier women???s ice hockey team has showcased in the first half of its highly successful inaugural season, Boston University is continuously striving for excellence in all areas and will work hard to create an exciting tournament in 2009.???
???Boston University has a long history of hockey and a fabulous new arena to host the championship,??? said Steve Metcalf, chair of the women???s ice hockey committee. ???The surrounding area is a hotbed of college hockey programs which brings forth a strong fan base.???
Women's ice hockey is a National Collegiate Championship, meaning that eligible institutions that sponsor the sport in Divisions I and II will be considered for the championship field. The tournament includes two semifinal games Friday night and a championship game on Sunday.
The University of Minnesota Duluth was also just awarded the bid for 2008, while the tournament will be at the University of Minnesota in 2006 and the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., will welcome the event in 2007.
