CAMDEN, NJ - Four of the six women's crews, headed by the varsity eight, advanced to the Grand Finals of the EAWRC Sprints conducted on the Cooper River on Sunday, May 15, as the Terriers enjoyed an excellent overall performance.
The Terriers were one of just five of the 17 crews entered to send four boats to the Grand Finals of their events, as B.U. finished in seventh place in the battle for the Willing Points Trophy. The Terriers concluded the one day Regatta with 43 points, which was just five points from fourth-place Yale. Brown won the Trophy with 74 points followed in order by Princeton (57), Radcliffe (56), Yale (48), Cornell (45), and Penn (44).
The varsity eight, which was sixth entering the Sprints, finished sixth as it covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:37.10. Yale was an upset winner in the Grand Final in 6:15.6, while the nation's top-ranked Princeton crew was second in 6:18.0. Brown was a second behind in 6:19.0 to finish third. Next came Radcliffe (6:22.0), Syracuse (6:30.5), and B.U. (6:37.10).
"Considering how young we are with no senior rowers and a freshman and sophomore in the (varsity) boat, I think it was quite an accomplishment," said Terrier head coach Holly Hatton. "I think we did a very good job for where we are and how inexperienced we are. This is a rebuilding year for us.
"My only disappointment was that we didn't rower faster in the finals," said the coach.
In the morning heat, the varsity eight rowed against top-seeded Princeton, seventh-seeded Navy, 12th-seeded Northeastern, and 13th-seeded Rutgers and finished second to the Tigers. Princeton was timed in 6:25.5 to the Terriers 6:30.3. The second-place finish earned the Terriers a spot in the Grand Finals where they took sixth.
The second varsity, varsity four "A" and novice four also finished sixth in their events.
The second varsity turned in a 6:59.9 in the Grand Finals and finished behind Princeton (6:27.3), Yale (6:30.0), Brown (6:34.2), Radcliffe (6:38.5), and Northeastern (6:54.3). In the morning racing, the seventh-seeded Terriers rowed against second-seeded Yale, fifth-seeded Cornell, 11th-seeded Navy, and 15th-seeded George Washington. Yale got the best of those in its heat with a time of 6:39.9, which was less than four seconds ahead of the Terriers (6:43.2).
In the meantime, the varsity four "A" boat was clocked in 7:36.9 in its Grand Final. They trailed first-place Brown (7:17.2), Yale (7:20.2), Penn (7:21.0), Radcliffe (7:22.7), and Princeton (7:30.2). The Terriers, who were seeded seventh, qualified for the Grand Finals by finishing second in its morning heat. Rowing against top-seeded Brown, sixth-seeded Cornell, 12th-seeded Dartmouth, and 13th-seeded Columbia, the Terriers were second to Brown, 7:24.1 to 7:27.4.
The Terriers' fourth boat to row in the Grand Finals was the novice four, which was timed in 8:34.2. Brown won the event in 7:34.5, followed by Columbia (7:48.9), Cornell (7:54.9), Radcliffe (8:02.4), and Penn (8:05.9).
Two other Terrier crews rowed in the Petite Finals. The novice eight was second in the Petites behind Rutgers by just under four seconds-6:51.0 to 6:54.8. Finally, the varsity four "B" finished third in 8:06.9, as the Rutgers "A" (7:48.2) and Rutgers "B" (8:00.9) boats finished ahead of B.U.
