Cross Country Teams Ready to Compete at America East Championships
October 28, 2006 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Boston University cross country squads will travel north this weekend for the 2006 America East Cross Country Championships at the University of Maine. The BU women's team is looking to defend its title after winning last year's event in Binghamton. The men's squad will also try to bring a championship back to Boston after a fourth-place finish in 2005.
The BU women's team is anchored by senior co-captain Marisa Ryan, who placed second overall in the 2005 America East Championship. Ryan has won three consecutive meets, including the New England Cross Country Championship on October 7. Ryan paces a strong supporting cast that includes fellow senior and co-captain Abbey Sadowski, who placed fourth overall in last year's event. Juniors Christine Laakso (8th) and Jessica Cickay (12th), graduate student Claire Robson (14th) and senior Jennifer Malenovsky (15th) also had strong showings a year ago.
The BU men's squad, captained by seniors Dan Sieckiewicz and Gregory Sinnott, features a balanced attack that has produced a different top finisher (Nick Goodman, David Proctor and Phil Shaw) in each of the last three meets. Five members of the current team participated in last year's conference championship. Junior Pat Hoye had the most success, placing ninth overall. Also competing in the 2005 championship were Jake LaRoe, Sieckiewicz, Sinnott and Goodman. The men's team last won the America East championship in 2000.
The last time the meet was held at the University of Maine (2001), the BU women's team captured the title with a score of 19 - 55 points better than second-place New Hampshire. The men's team placed a close second, four points behind winner New Hampshire.
