BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team hosts second-ranked New Hampshire on Thursday at 7:00 p.m at Walter Brown Arena. It will be the Terriers' first Hockey East home game of the 2007-08 season.
Boston University (0-4-2, 0-1-0 HE) last faced the Wildcats on Oct. 21, when the Terriers skated to a 3-1 defeat at Whittemore Arnea. Sophomore Sarah Appleton scored BU's lone goal during the meeting, while UNH (5-1-0, 3-0-0 HE) freshman Jenn Wakefield had two goals and an assist.
The Terriers had a short week to prepare, coming off a 5-5 overtime tie against ninth-ranked Dartmouth Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Melissa Anderson started the day off on a high note, scoring twice in the first period to give Boston University the early advantage. Anderson added in two assists, while junior co-captain Gina Kearns had three assists of her own. Senior Julie Poulin and juniors Amanda Shaw and Laurel Koller each scored as well. But the potent Big Green offense persevered, scoring all five of its goals during the final two periods. Sophomore goaltender Melissa Haber saved 50 shots, setting a new school record. The record was formerly held by current junior Allyse Wilcox, who had 45 saves against Providence on Feb. 11, 2006.
The Wildcats also played on Sunday, posting a 5-0 shutout against Maine. Senior Jennifer Hitchcock had two goals and an assist during the game, while UNH senior Leah Craig chipped in three assists. New Hampshire also earned two points from both junior Sam Faber (one goal, two assists) and senior Sadie Wright-Ward (2 assists).
Wakefield leads the team with eight points and five goals, while Craig heads the team with five assists. Freshman Kayley Herman has started the majority of the team's games in goal, sporting a 4-0-0 record with a 1.00 gaa and a .942 save percentage.
The Terriers dropped all three games to the Wildcats last season, but played to a close 3-2 finish on Feb. 21. The two teams will meet once more this season, with the last game at Whittemore Arena on Sat. 26.
BU's next game is against Union on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
