Women's Crew Readies For Eastern Sprints
May 11, 2007 | Women's Rowing
Camden, N.J.—The Boston University women’s crew is seeded tenth in a field of 18 crews for the 2007 EAWRC Eastern Sprints held Sunday, May 13 on the Cooper River. The Terriers will field boats in the varsity eight, the JV eight, the novice eight and the third varsity fours.
BU’s 10th-seeded varsity boat will race against third-seeded Princeton, fourth-seeded Dartmouth, ninth-seeded Syracuse, 15th-seeded Dartmouth and 16th-seeded George Washington. The second varsity eight is ranked eighth – the highest of all the Terrier boats entered – and will row against second-seeded Yale, fifth-seeded Dartmouth, 11th-seeded Rhode Island, and 14th-seeded Boston College. The novice eight is seeded 12th and will be matched against top-seeded Brown, sixth-seeded Syracuse, seventh-seeded Navy and 13th-seeded Columbia. The third varsity four is seeded ninth and will row against third-seeded Princeton, fourth-seeded Yale, tenth-seeded Penn, 15th-seeded Georgetown and 16th-seeded Columbia.
The Terriers have won a trio of titles since the beginning of the Eastern Sprints in 1976. The first title came in 1983 and the last two were back-to-back in 1991 and 1992. The Terriers finished second in the Grand Final in 1993, but that marked BU’s best finish until last season’s Sprints when the varsity eight placed fourth. The Terriers have also won titles in the lightweight eights, second novice eights and third novice fours.
Last year, the varsity eight had its highest finish in 13 years and the varsity fours won the silver medal in its race. All four of BU’s seeded boats placed higher than their rankings on the day.
BU will be looking for a bid to the 2007 NCAA National Championships, held May 25-27 in Oakridge, Tenn.
