Men???s Golf to Benefit from Boston University Club Program

BOSTON – In response to a realignment currently being contemplated by members of the America East Conference that sponsor men’s golf, which would include regular competition with schools from the Midwest and western part of the country, Boston University has decided to transition its men’s golf program from a varsity sport to a club sport, Boston University’s Athletic Director Michael Lynch announced Tuesday.
"Decisions like this are never fun or easy, but we were faced with no other viable alternative," Lynch said.
In response to the new NCAA Golf Championship selection process, America East teams Hartford and Binghamton are in conversations with schools from the Big Sky Conference, which include schools such as Weber State and Sacramento State, in an attempt to form a new men’s golf conference.
"We are thrilled to welcome men’s golf to the club program," said Warin Dexter, Boston University’s Executive Director of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. "This will give the team a chance to play other geographic and similarly competitive programs including UNH, UMass - Amherst, UVM, and Northeastern. In addition, it will be able to join an intercollegiate league providing regionally-based competition and eliminating many restrictions such as the competition for practice facilities, while maintaining many of the benefits players experience at the varsity level."
"To attempt to continue as an independent program in an increasingly challenging scheduling environment is not feasible for us right now," said Lynch. "It makes more sense to create opportunities at the club level that could be richer and more satisfying for all of the athletes involved."
"We will continue to sponsor the women’s golf program, which has won the America East Conference Championship each of the last two seasons," Lynch continued. "It’s a unique opportunity to be able to offer the men a robust and thriving club sport program. Boston University has 30 club teams and over 960 students participating in inter-league play."
The Boston University Athletic Department is comprised of 23 men’s and women’s varsity teams and over 500 student-athletes dedicated to excellence in athletics, academics and community.
