WAKEFIELD, Mass. - After helping the Boston University women's ice hockey team open Hockey East play with a pair of wins, sophomore Lauren Cherewyk has been named the Women's Hockey East Pure Hockey Player of the Week and freshman Tara Watchorn earned Mission Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the league office Monday. Cherewyk scored five goals last week and Watchorn tallied her first four career points.
Cherewyk scored two power-play goals, including the game-winner, and Watchorn netted BU's other goal, the first of her career, to lead the Terriers to a 3-2 upset of then-No. 4 New Hampshire on Thursday at Walter Brown Arena.
On Saturday, Cherewyk notched her first collegiate hat trick and Watchorn chipped in three assists as the Terriers cruised to an 8-1 win over Maine at Agganis Arena.
Cherewyk's hat trick was the third in program history and the sophomore winger had never had a multiple-goal game before last week. She now leads the team with five goals and is tied for second in Hockey East with four power-play goals. Cherewyk matched the BU record of two power-play goals in a game in both games last week. Cherewyk was also named the New England Hockey Journal Player of the Week and the USCHO.com Division I Player of the Week.
Watchorn is the second Terrier to take home top rookie honors this season after classmate Jenelle Kohanchuk earned the award on Oct. 6. Watchorn's four points in conference play are tops among both defensemen and freshmen in Hockey East.
BU enters this week ranked eighth in the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll, the first time in program history the team has been ranked in that poll. The Terriers face No. 5 New Hampshire once again on Thursday (Oct. 30) at 7 p.m., with this meeting on the Wildcats' home ice in Durham, before returning to Brown Arena to host Providence on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 3 p.m.
