CAMDEN, N.J. - Three of the four boats fielded by the Boston University women's rowing team made the Grand Finals as BU put together a strong day at the 2008 EAWRC Sprints on Sunday in Camden, N.J. on the Cooper River.
The varsity eight and the "B" four each placed sixth overall, the JV eight finished fifth, while the "A" four finished second in the Petite Final to place eighth overall on the day.
"I thought we had a great morning," said head coach Holly Hatton. "Fur three of our four boats to make the finals is pretty incredible. Our early season results panned out here as the team made a significant jump. And we have five freshman in our JV boat, which puts us in a great position for next year. All in all, it was definitely a step up and I feel we are now back on track."
The varsity started the morning off right, finishing second in its heat behind Brown and just 0.24 seconds ahead of Dartmouth. The JV just edged out Princeton in its heat, while both coxed fours placed third in their respective heats.
The afternoon racing was moved up in advance of expected bad weather. The JV eight had a tough start to its race, coming off the line last. But by the first 500m, the Terriers benefited from a tailwind and had moved into fifth place ahead of Cornell by 3/4 of a length which BU increased to one full length by 750m and open water by the halfway mark.
The varsity struggled a bit at the beginning of its race and couldn't recover. Penn had a length on the Terriers at the 500m mark and held it the rest of the way.
