PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Genevieve Lacasse stopped all 34 shots she faced to lead Providence to a 2-0 win over the Boston University women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena. Seniors Katy Beach and Mari Pehkonen scored in the third period for the Friars, who leapfrogged the Terriers in the Hockey East standings with the win.

BU held a 34-25 advantage in shots on goal, outshooting its opponent for the sixth straight game, but was unable to put anything past Lacasse, who recorded her fifth shutout to drop the Terriers to 11-8-5 overall and 8-5-0 in Hockey East action. Senior Allyse Wilcox made 23 saves in the other cage for BU.

Two scoreless periods passed before Providence broke through. Early in the final frame, junior Colleen Martin made a long pass to classmate Pamela McDevitt at the blue line. McDevitt skated in to fire a wrister that was saved by Wilcox, but the rebound went to Beach, who had an open net on the other side to knock in her seventh goal of the season at 2:49.

The Friars doubled their lead at the 6:04 mark when Pehkonen weaved through traffic in the offensive zone before popping a low-angle shot, the sixth tally of her senior campaign, with the assist credited to freshman Kate Bacon.

The Terriers held Providence scoreless on four power-play opportunities and killed off a 23-second two-man advantage that the Friars had late in the first period. BU, though, was 0-for-7 on the man advantage and shut out for the fifth time this season.

Providence improves to 13-10-2 overall and 8-3-1 in Hockey East with the win. The two squads will meet again to wrap up their regular-season series on Sunday (Jan. 25) at 3 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena in Boston.
