Terriers Volunteer at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
October 8, 2009 | General
BOSTON - On Sunday, nearly 100 Boston University student-athletes volunteered at the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. The Terriers took on various responsibilities at the event that helped raise more than $3.1 million with 40,000 walkers coming out to support the event.
The student-athletes arrived at the Esplanade and were the first to interact with the walkers and were responsible for registering participants, handing out forms, directing walkers and tracking donations brought in on the day of the event. The community service outreach project was organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
The American Cancer Society uses the annual event to raise awareness and donations in the fight against breast cancer. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the nation's oldest and largest one-day fundraiser. In 2008, more than $3.3 million was raised towards breast cancer research in the Boston area.
