Providence, R.I. - The Boston University softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Big East foe Providence (10-17) on Wednesday afternoon as it falls to 20-9 on the season. The Terriers were set to face off with the Friars in a second game, however, the contest was called due to rain. In the loss, junior Rachel Moeller went 2-for-3 and senior Shayne Lotito kept her 11-game hitting streak alive with a 1-for-2 batting performance.

Junior hurler Cassidi Hardy (9-4) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs - four earned - on six hits. She struck out two batters and issued two walks. The Terriers connected on 10 hits with eight different batters recording at least one in the contest.

After going down by one run, 2-1, in the first inning, BU took its first lead of the game in the second as it put two up on the scoreboard. With two outs, freshman Erica Casacci stepped up to the plate and singled to shortstop. She subsequently stole second and two at-bats later scored on a single up the middle by Moeller. The Terriers then loaded the bases and when senior Christy Leath drew a walk, Lotito scored to put them ahead. In the bottom half of the frame, Providence tacked on one more to tie the score at 3-3.

In the fifth inning, both squads added another run before the Friars' pivotal two-run sixth inning. With two outs, Providence's Gina Rossi went deep for a two-run homer, which held up as the game-winner. The Friars' Alicia Grosso retired BU's batters in order in the seventh to secure the victory.

BU will now turn its attention to another Big East opponent as it will take on Connecticut on Thursday (April 2) at 4 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
