April 13, 2009 | Softball
West Hartford, Conn. - The Boston University softball team (27-12, 7-3 AE) took over sole possession of second place in the America East Conference on Monday afternoon as it claimed a 3-0 victory over Hartford (13-14, 6-4 AE), backed by a complete-game shutout from junior hurler Cassidi Hardy. Senior Melissa Dubay led the way on offense with a 2-for-4 performance in the batter's box with one RBI.
Hardy improved to 14-4 in the pitcher's circle with five strikeouts. She surrendered just three hits and issued three walks. Dubay continued to inch closer to former teammate Chiya Louie's ('07) career RBI record, as she drove in one run for a career total of 117 - eight away from breaking the record. Senior Shayne Lotito and junior Rachel Hebert added insurance runs with respective RBI doubles.
As a team, the Terriers connected on nine hits - including sophomore April Setterlund's 12th double of the season, which is just two away from breaking a 13-year single-season record.
The Terriers lit up the scoreboard almost immediately as Dubay's single up the middle brought home Setterlund, who just one at-bat earlier had doubled to left center in the first inning. They tacked on one more in the fourth with Hebert's double to left field and Lotito capped off the scoring in the sixth frame on a two-bagger to right center.
Defensively, the Terriers turned their 23rd double play of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning and Hardy retired the final four batters in order to seal the victory.
BU will travel to UMass on Wednesday (April 15) for a 5 p.m. contest, before taking on Holy Cross in a doubleheader on Thursday (April 16) beginning at 3 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
