Lots to discuss regarding this SUPER busy weekend for Boston University athletics, but today, my eyes are glued on AmericaEast.com for the Basketball Media Day festivities. We'll learn who the coaches pick to win the league tournament and which players they expect to have successful seasons.
You can follow along with me by clicking HERE.
The event is taking place at the Connecticut State Capitol in Hartford. Beginning at 11 a.m., America East's website will be streaming live interviews with all 18 basketball coaches, including Patrick Chambers and Kelly Greenberg.
It's always difficult to predict the preseason polls and all-conference teams, but I'll go out on a limb and choose two of the players who just happen to wear Scarlet and White.
For the women, Chantell Alford was the first America East Rookie of the Year in 15 seasons to be placed on the All-Conference First Team. Check out this release from the BU athletic communications staff listing all of her accomplishments from her freshman campaign. She broke the BU freshman scoring record (447 points), which happened to belong to the program's current all-time leading scorer, Katie Terhune. Impressive!
Now for my prediction on the men, I need to spend a little more time writing. That's because this will be your LAST season to watch him play. John Holland is on pace to finish a remarkable career at Boston University, and even if he never played another game, he would already be remembered as one of the best, at least offensively for sure.
After he was named the America East Rookie of the Year in 2008, he received first-team honors in both 2009 and 2010. This past season, he just happened to become the first-ever Terrier to lead the league in scoring while setting a school record for points in a season at 673. In one memorable game, he scored 43 points at Delaware.
We should have expected it because an NBCSports.com blog said he was one of 16 players in the nation capable of scoring 60 in a game. The guy is a steals machine and can hit shots from anywhere. He has had some pretty sick dunks as well, like this one. Click HERE to look at all of his accomplishments from last season.
I've been perusing all of the preseason basketball publications like Sporting News, Athalon etc... All of them say that Holland is the top returning player in the league. He is just the 40th player in league history to score over 1,500 points and was named one of the top 10 players in New England by both the coaches and media last season.
Rivals.com has him listed on its Preseason All-Low-Major team.
Can you tell I'm ready for the basketball season to begin?
Until next time...
