Rhett Gets Ready to Head to the Rinks

The weekend’s right around the corner and there’s plenty of BU action to keep me very busy. Before I get to the games, did you see that both the men’s and women’s basketball teams were picked to win the America East conference?
Now, if you love ice hockey, which I of course do, then this is the perfect weekend for you as both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams are playing in their home openers. The women host Wayne State for a two-game series on Friday (Oct. 15) at 7 p.m. and Saturday (Oct. 16) at 2 p.m., while the men’s team also opens Hockey East play against UMass on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Friday night’s matchup will be very exciting for me as I get to help raise four banners at Walter Brown Arena, including the 2010 Hockey East championship and NCAA tournament appearance banners. We’ll also be unveiling banners commemorating BU hosting the 2006 Frozen Four and the 1981 Beanpot champions, which BU won while competing as a club team.
I can’t wait to see the team at home for first time. In this week’s Scarlet Daily Digest, Scott Weighart took a look at the team’s high expectations. Also, BU Today did a story on graduate student Catherine Ward, junior Jenn Wakefield and freshman Marie-Philip Poulin. Check it out here.
If Friday’s good, then Saturday’s even better with a doubleheader of hockey. I'm happy to see the men's team off to such a great start! Last weekend, the Terriers won the Warrior Ice Breaker Tournament for the third time with wins over Wisconsin and Notre Dame.
Junior David Warsofsky and freshman Sahir Gill were named Hockey East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, while the squad garnered Team of the Week honors by Hockey East and College Hockey News.
It's going to be an exciting day and I’ll have to make sure I take a nap in between games before the start of the men's contest at Agganis Arena.
If you can't make it out to the games, you can still watch all of this weekend's action through BU All-Access. If you don't have your computer nearby, I like checking out all the game updates through the BU Athletics' Twitter account @BUGameDay. I can't wait to see you at the rinks!
