It's hard not to get excited for a day like today when five BU teams are competing in Boston. Whether you're a fan of the grass, hardwood or ice, there's plenty of Terrier action to keep you busy.
I can't wait to make the trip down Comm. Ave. to see the women's soccer team take on Boston College in the first round of the NCAA tournament at 4 p.m. Last weekend, the Terriers won their fourth straight America East championship with a 4-0 victory over Maine. BU has now shutout its last 13 opponents and extended its shutout streak to 1,187:02 minutes. The 13-game streak is now tied with North Carolina and Central Michigan for second all-time in NCAA history. Four Terriers - Katherine Donnelly, Shauna Kelleher, Jessica Luscinski and Kylie Strom - were named to the all-championship team, while Luscinski was also named the most outstanding player. Congrats to the whole team on such an impressive streak. Let's hope they keep it going against the Eagles!
Today might as well be called `BU vs. BC Day' as the women's basketball team will play its home opener against Boston College at Case Gym at 5 p.m. The conference's coaches picked the Terriers to finish first in the preseason poll and I can't wait to see all five starters, including reigning AE Rookie of the Year Chantell Alford, from last year's team on the court this season. The Terriers have been very impressive at Case Gym, compiling a 33-9 record at home the past three seasons.
The men's basketball team will also kick off its season when it visits Northeastern at 7 p.m. The Terriers were picked to finish first in the America East and boast a pair of preseason all-league members with senior John Holland and junior Jake O'Brien. Last season, the Terriers made it to the conference title game for the first time since 2003 and advanced all the way to the College Basketball Invitational semifinals. I can't wait to see what head coach Patrick Chambers has in store for us in his second year at the helm.
If you're a little hot after all that running around to see your favorite teams, you can cool down with me at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m. when the top-ranked men's ice hockey team begins a home-and-home series with Merrimack. The Terriers are 6-0-2 to start the season and are the first BU squad to go undefeated through its first eight games since the 1977-78 national championship squad. And if you need another reason to check out the team, did you see the game last week against Maine? This team just doesn't quit as Hockey East Rookie of the week Charlie Coyle scored the game-tying goal with 1:21 left in regulation.
And don't forget about the women's ice hockey team starting things off against Vermont at 3 p.m. Sophomore Kathryn Miller enjoyed a career weekend against Providence and New Hampshire, equaling her 2009-10 point total with two goals and three assists and being named Hockey East Player of the Week. The Terriers are on a nine game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) and are 6-0-0 at Walter Brown Arena for the first time in program history.
I hope to see you today!
Until next time ...
