Rhett Ready to Taste Gold Again

I have to admit I can get greedy at times, but in this case, that's not a bad thing. I correctly predicted the men's cross country team upsetting the field with a first-place finish at the America East Championships last weekend, and I want to take home two more trophies this Saturday.
My first chance will be with the women's soccer team. Ranked 22nd in the latest Soccer America poll, No. 1 seed BU will host No. 6 Maine at 1 p.m. My fellow Terriers currently have the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history for consecutive shutouts with 12. The Black Bears will try to pull off a huge upset after defeating the No. 2 and 3 seeds (Stony Brook and Hartford). They will be coming into the game tomorrow with a lot of confidence, so don't assume anything with this one. Just remember that the first 100 BU students with ID at the gate will get into the game for free.
Now the men have the weekend off because of clinching a first-round bye last week. They host a semifinal opponent next Wednesday at 7 p.m. Check out today's Scarlet Daily Digest feature on junior Ben Berube, who was one of seven guys on the team to earn first or second-team all-conference honors. Thanks to everyone who voted and helped him become the Fans' Choice Player of the Year. It was well deserved!
The field hockey team also earned several awards from the America East, including Jacinda McLeod and Nicole van Oosterom being selected Defensive and Midfielder of the Year, respectively. The 17th-ranked women face 15th-ranked Albany today at 5:30 p.m. I'm hesitant to make a call because of how good the conference has been this year. 19th-ranked New Hampshire is the host, so the Wildcats will be the favorite with home field advantage. That said, BU captured the league title at Albany last year, so this tournament should prove to be very interesting.
Besides having two league titles on the line this weekend, the BU ice hockey teams are in action on Saturday. The fifth-ranked women host Providence at 3 p.m., and the third-ranked men host a ranked Maine squad at 7 p.m. Congrats to Sahir Gill and Marie-Philip Poulin for winning Hockey East Rookie of the Month honors. The two are definitely off to a great start.
USCHO.com senior writer Scott Weighart, who has been contributing to this website with the Friday feature articles, has a nice piece on head coach Jack Parker. It's definitely worth a read.
If you're around tomorrow to watch hockey and women's soccer, do stop by Case Gym for a bit to catch the wrestling team. The matches start at 11 a.m. and will last until around 5 p.m.
Finally, a big shout out to some BU men's crew alums, who are having a lot of success this week at the World Championships in New Zealand. Will Daly ('06) is on the lightweight four boat and will compete in the B Final for the United States. Florian Mennigan ('06), a gold medalist last year, will look to repeat with his fellow Germans in the Eights. Meindert Klem ('10) and Jozef Klaassen ('07) are on the Netherlands boat that earned a bronze last year. The three will battle it out in the Final this weekend.
All four men competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well, so congrats on their success!
Row2k.com of course focuses on the U.S. team but does a great job covering the entire event. You can also follow the races this weekend by clicking here.
Until next time...
