First, I wish Boston University students all the best when it comes to their end-of-the-semester exams. They see the finish line but know they have one final hump to get over before heading home for the holidays. Good luck!
The student-athletes are always told by their coaches to never look ahead, especially toward the postseason. I can promise you that will be head coach Brian Durocher's message to the women's ice hockey team after today's big announcement.
Ranking in the top 10 for both offensive and defensive scoring, the defending Hockey East champion Terriers are off to their best start in program history with a 14-2-3 record after defeating crosstown rivals Northeastern and Harvard last week. Well someone has taken notice, as they were honored today with the program's highest-ever ranking.
The latest USCHO.com poll has BU at the No. 3 spot, nine points ahead of Mercyhurst and 32 behind No. 2 Wisconsin. Look closely though at the poll and you'll see why coach Durocher will work hard on keeping his team focused.
BU has two regular season games remaining against No. 6 BC, one against No. 8 Providence and at least two left against No. 10 Northeastern (possible meeting at the Beanpot). UConn and New Hampshire are on the schedule too, so there's still plenty of work to be done.
That said, congrats on the great honor!
On a final note, the holiday season allows us the time to reflect on everything we have in our lives and also the opportunity to give back. If you have the means, please follow the example of the women's rowing team and help spread the holiday cheer to those in need.
Until next time...
