WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Boston University men's basketball team had four members score in double figures but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with three seconds remaining, as Hartford held on for the 59-55 win Saturday evening at Chase Arena.
Led by 13 points from freshman D.J. Irving and 11 rebounds from junior Patrick Hazel, the Terriers fall to 9-12 on the year and 4-3 in America East play. Irving added four assists to earn America East Player of the Game honors, while senior John Holland (12), junior Darryl Partin (10) and classmate Matt Griffin (10) each finished in double figure scoring.
Senior Joe Zeglinski recorded a game-high 15 points and team-high seven boards to lead the Hawks (7-12, 4-2 AE) and earn AE Player of the Game honors. Milton Burton and Morgan Sabia combined for 21 points, while Anthony Minor had six rebounds and eight points off four field goals, including the one with 1:29 remaining that gave UH the lead (56-55) for good.
BU jumped out of the gate with Irving scoring the first seven points to ignite a 13-0 run capped by Holland's dunk with 13:51 remaining in the first half. Partin's jumper three minutes later extended the lead to 20-4, but then the Hawks drained four 3-pointers during a 14-3 stretch to draw within five (23-18) at 6:26.
Ahead 26-22, the Terriers finished the final four minutes of the half with a 10-2 spurt to enter the locker room with a 36-24 advantage. BU shot 58.3 percent from the field while holding the Hawks to just 26.9 percent shooting. However, UH kept the game relatively close by enticing BU into eight turnovers.
In the second, Morris drove down the sideline for a dunk and 51-36 lead with 11:11 remaining. Unfortunately for the Terriers, that field goal would be their last of the game. UH would effectively use a 1-3-1 defense that would create five turnovers and hold BU to a 0-of-10 shooting performance to finish the game.
The Hawks committed their seventh foul with 9:32 left, and Griffin made both free throw attempts for the 53-41 lead. Irving later went to the line at 7:16 to give BU a 55-45 advantage. That would be the Terriers' last score of the contest.
Minor hit a layup following a UH offensive rebound, and after a missed BU jumper, Clayton Brothers drained a 3-pointer to pull within five, 55-50. Burton then hit two field goals with the second coming at 3:20.
Holland missed a jumper but blocked Zeglinski's 3-point attempt, keeping BU ahead, 55-54. Partin drew a foul at 2:27 and missed both free throw attempts. He grabbed the offensive rebound following his second shot but missed a contested layup.
UH quickly pushed the ball up the court, and Minor tipped in his own missed layup for the lead. After a defensive rebound, Zeglinski made a desperate heave inside the 3-point line as the buzzer sounded to give the Hawks a 58-55 advantage with 23 seconds left in regulation.
Both Holland and Irving had open 3-point looks but were unable to convert, and Burton hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal the win for the Hawks.
BU finished 20-of-44 (.455) and 5-of-18 (.278) from beyond the arc, while UH went 21-of-59 (.356) and 8-of-28 (.286), respectively. The Terriers had the edge in rebounding, 34-32, but only had six points in the paint in the second half after scoring 12 in the first. They also had 10 turnovers to finish with 18 total against the Hawks' 10.
With their five-game winning streak against UH snapped, the Terriers will return back to campus and host Binghamton Wednesday (Jan. 26) with tip-off slated for 9 p.m. The BU women will first face the Bearcats at 7 p.m. in the Agganis Arena doubleheader.
