BOSTON - Fourth-year Boston University women's rowing head coach Stacey Rippetoe announced Thursday the addition of four newcomers to the 2012-13 Terrier squad. The Class of 2016 includes four rowers - Jo Jeelani, Dominique Baker, Samantha Woo and Emily Lerhe.
"Each of these athletes is enthusiastic and competitive and has demonstrated her commitment to rowing," Rippetoe said. "Part of what makes Jo, Dominique, Sam, and Emily such a strong class is their understanding of what it takes to train hard enough to win, how to be part of a positive, competitive team and what it means to row for Boston University. I am confident that they will love their time as Terrier student-athletes and will add to our team's strength."
Hailing from Batavia, Ohio, Jeelani will graduate from Cincinnati Country Day School. She rows for CCDS and for No Limits Rowing. Her racing highlights include a seventh-place result in the pair at the 2011 Youth National Championships and winning both the double and quad as a freshman at Head of the Hooch. Jeelani wants to study neuroscience at BU.
Attending Langley H.S., Baker will join the Terriers from McLean, Va. She rowed with Thompson Boat Center this past fall, earning ninth place at Head of the Charles and third at Head of the Schuylkill in the Youth 8. This past summer, Dominique won the Junior Double at Club Nationals while racing for Jacksonville Rowing Club. Baker is interested in mechanical engineering.
A native of West Windsor, N.J., Woo is currently a senior at West Windsor Plainsboro High School South. Sam rows for Mercer Junior Rowing Club, where she earned 11th in the Varsity 8 at the 2011 Youth National Championships. Woo will attend BU with desires to become a physical therapist.
The lone Canadian, Lerhe lives in Victoria, BC and will graduate from Claremont Secondary School. She rows for the Victoria City Rowing Club and has won at the Canadian Henley twice, in the 2009 U17 Women's 4+ and in the 2011 U19 Women's Quad by a nine-second margin. Lerhe plans to choose a major in the sciences.
