BOSTON - Highlighted by contests against nearly half of the 2010 NCAA tournament field, the Boston University field hockey team and head coach Sally Starr have announced the program's schedule for the upcoming 2011 season.
The Terriers will face off against seven of the 16 teams that qualified for last year's national tournament and will kick off the 2011 campaign against defending NCAA and ACC champion Maryland on Aug. 26 in Philadelphia. Other 2010 NCAA squads that appear on this year's schedule are Albany, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Michigan State and Syracuse.
BU will move to a new field this season, as Jordan Field at Harvard University will be the site for four of the Terriers' seven home contests and will also serve as the team's practice facility. The remaining three home games will be played at Boston College's Newton Campus Field.
The Terriers will open the season at the Conference Cup, hosted by Temple on Aug. 26 & 28. BU will face the Terrapins in their opener before taking on Bucknell on the second day of the tournament.
The home opener will take place on Sept. 2 when BU plays host to Providence at Jordan Field. Two days later, the Terriers will welcome Michigan State to town in a contest that will be played at Newton Campus Field.
The Terriers' first of two intra-city match-ups will take place on Sept. 9 when they host Boston College at Jordan Field. BU will also visit Northeastern on Oct. 23 in its non-conference finale.
BU's longest road trip of the year will be to Ann Arbor, Mich., as it will face Ball State on Michigan's field on Sept. 16 before taking on the Wolverines, the 2010 Big Ten champions, on Sept. 18.
After visits to two more defending conference champions in Massachusetts (Atlantic 10) and Syracuse (Big East) on Sept. 23 & 25, respectively, the Terriers will open their America East schedule against Vermont on Oct. 1 at Jordan Field. The following day, BU will welcome ACC foe Duke to Newton Campus Field.
In addition to Vermont, BU will have two other America East opponents make the trip to Boston, playing New Hampshire at Jordan Field on Oct. 14 before taking on reigning league champ Albany in Newton on Oct. 22.
The Terriers will make two trips during conference play, including a tilt with Maine on Oct. 9. The final game of the regular season will take place on Oct. 29 with a visit to Fairfield.
The final two non-conference road contests will take place in October when the Terriers visit Dartmouth (Oct. 7) and Connecticut (Oct. 19).
