MADISON, Conn. - Paced by junior Rich Peters' ninth-place finish, the Boston University men's cross country team placed ninth at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday afternoon at Hammonassett State Park.
Peters is the first BU harrier to earn a top-10 finish at an NCAA regional event since 2003. He completed the course with a time of 30:29.8, with Mitch Goose of Iona taking first place (30:04.5). Peters was just 2.8 seconds behind the fourth-place finisher and improved 40 spots from last season's 49th-place performance. He was also the top runner from the America East.
The Terriers were the top team among America East entrants and finished six spots and nearly 100 points clear of 15th-place Stony Brook.
Senior Matt Paulson finished 28th with a time of 31:07.7, while classmate Robert Gibson was 50th with a time of 31:34.1. Thanks to those strong performances, BU boasted three of the five conference runners in the top 50.
Freshman Kevin Thomas posted a time of 32:49.1 in his regional debut, while senior Elliot Lehane completed his collegiate career by crossing the finish line with a time of 33:18.3 to round out the Terriers' top five. Sophomore Ben Ravetz (33:39.9) and freshman Alec Olson (35:34.2) also competed for the Terriers on Friday.
BU placed in the top 10 of an event for the fifth time this season, and earned its highest finish at the Northeast Regional since the Terriers finished seventh on this same course in 2010.
The field for the NCAA Championships will be announced by noon on Saturday. Peters will be in the mix to earn an at-large invitation to the meet, which will be held on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.
