BOSTON - Locked in a pitcher's duel through six and a half innings, the Boston University softball team defeated Harvard, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. The Terriers improved their record to 25-13 (8-3 America East) on the season.
Sophomore Holli Floetker threw her 13th complete game of the season and fourth shutout as she improved her record to 14-4 on the season. Floetker struck out nine batters and allowed just three hits on the day. Behind Floetker's arm, the Terriers retired the first 10 Harvard batters of the game.

Sophomore Megan Volpano notched the only extra base hit of the game with a double while also driving in the winning run with a sacrifice fly. Classmate Jayme Mask, junior Emily Roesch and Senior Melanie Delgado also posted hits for BU.
Both teams had 1-2-3 innings through the first two frames before Roesch got the first hit of the day with a single through the right side in the bottom of the third before she was caught stealing second. Mask grounded out to third base to end the inning.
Harvard got its first hit in the top of the fourth with a single by Shelbi Olson but Floetker retired the next two batters to end the inning.
The Crimson threatened to score in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded. Jane Alexander reached on a single to right field before Olson's grounded out to third advanced her. Kasey Lange took first after being hit by a pitch and Stephanie Regan loaded the bases with a single to the pitcher. Allison Scott ended the inning by grounding out to second base, as BU prevented Harvard from scoring.
The Terriers got their change in the bottom half of the frame with Delgado starting off with a single. Rookie Kendra Meadows stepped into to pinch run and advanced to second base when Mask reached on a bunt. Senior Erica Casacci advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Volpano then stepped up to the plate and used a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive Meadows home and give BU the 1-0 lead.
BU made quick work of the Crimson in the top of the seventh, as Floetker struck out two and Emily Gusse popped up to the shortstop to end the game with a 1-0 BU victory.
The Terriers remain at home for another non-conference clash on Thursday when BU hosts Rhode Island at the BU Softball Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
