BOSTON – Four players scored in double-digits as the Boston University men’s basketball team defeated Binghamton, 83-59, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. The Terriers shot 54.5 percent from the field and tied their season-high with 12 made 3-pointers to improve to 8-9 on the season and 2-2 in the America East, while Binghamton drops to 2-15 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Junior D.J. Irving led the Terriers with 16 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Named America East Player of the Game, freshman John Papale was just shy of his first career double-double with 14 points and a season-high nine rebounds, while juniors Dom Morris and Travis Robinson posted 10 points each.
The Bearcats were led by Jimmy Gray’s 17 points, and Jordan Reed added 14 points. Gray added a team-high four rebounds and three assists for America East Player of the Game honors, as the Terriers won the battle at the boards, 41-35.
Owning a 42-33 lead at the half, the Terriers pulled away from the Bearcats with a 22-2 run in the middle of the second period for their seventh straight victory in the series.
Binghamton broke an early 7-7 stalemate at 13:03 off a jumper by Reed for its final lead of the game. Irving immediately followed with one of his three 3-pointers to give BU the lead for good.
Trailing by as many as eight, Gray drained a 3-pointer at 6:57 and 5:44, respectively, to pull the Bearcats within three, but on each ensuing possession, the Terriers responded with one of their own. Freshman Justin Alston's slam dunk off a short feed from Robinson gave BU the 40-25 advantage with 2:30 left in the first half.
Held to 31.3 percent shooting over the first 20 minutes, Binghamton cut the double-digit deficit to eight (55-47) at 12:06 in the second half with a 7-0 spurt, However, the Bearcats would not get any closer, as the Terriers scored 14 straight points with freshman Nathan Dieudonne nailing two 3-pointers.
Irving's free throws at 3:51 gave BU its largest lead of the game, 81-51. The Terriers shot 30-of-55 (.545) from the field and 12-of-27 (.444) from behind the arc while hitting 11-of-15 (.733) at the line to finish with a season-high 83 points.
Binghamton shot 21-of-68 (.309) and only had nine turnovers against BU's 15 miscues. The Bearcats though only faced a 24-14 deficit in points in the paint.
BU will next start a three-game road trip with a visit to America East leader Stony Brook (12-4, 3-0 AE) on Tuesday (Jan. 15). Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m., and fans will be able to watch the game live on ESPN3.
