BOSTON - Despite four players scoring in double-digits, the Boston University women's basketball team suffered a 78-68 setback to Yale on Tuesday night at Case Gym. BU moves to 1-3 on the season while Yale improves to 3-1.
Seniors Rashidat Agboola and Danielle Callahan led the Terriers with 13 points each while classmate Melissa Gallo sank a career-high four 3-pointers to contribute 12 points. Freshman Courtney Latham also reached double figures with 11 points.
Junior Mollie McKendrick led BU on the boards with nine rebounds while chipping in eight points. Sophomore Katie Poppe added seven points while senior Whitney Turner posted four points.
Yale received scoring contributions from 10 players, including three with double-digit outputs. Meredith Boardman led the Bulldogs with 13 points and eight rebounds while Janna Graf and Sarah Halejian added 12 points each.
BU shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) for the game while Yale connected on 44.6 percent (25-of-56) of its shot. The Terriers shot a season-high 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs went 5-of-10 from the 3-point line and 23-of-30 from the charity stripe.
Yale held a slight rebounding edge, 38-36, and turned 19 BU turnovers into 22 points.
The Bulldogs opened the game with an 8-0 run before Callahan got the Terriers on the board with a layup two and a half minutes into the contest. Behind a pair of 3-pointers from Latham and Poppe, BU tied the game at 8-8 with 16:10 on the clock. The Terriers held on to the advantage for almost four minutes until Alex Osborn-Jones caused a BU turnover and netted a jumper to give Yale a 14-13 lead with 12:11 remaining in the half.
The Bulldogs attempted to extend their lead but Latham knotted the game at 20-20 with a pair of free throws at the 8:09 mark. Yale responded with a 10-2 run to make it an eight-point game, 30-22, with 4:27 remaining before halftime. Gallo stopped the run with her second 3-pointer of the half and Agboola added a pair of free throws to bring the margin down to five point. The Terriers were held without a field goal for the final 3:36 of the half and Yale took a 35-27 lead into the break.
BU was plagued at the start of the second half by three turnovers which led to four quick points for Yale to extend its lead to double-digits. Trailing by 14, BU used an 11-2 run to make it a five-point game, 43-48, with 15:05 to play. A layup from Callahan at 12:28 kept the deficit to single digits but the Terriers only netted a pair of free throws over the next four minutes, as Yale built its lead to 20 points, 62-42.
With under seven minutes remaining, the Terriers began to chip away at Yale's lead, aided by Gallo's fourth 3-pointer of the game and a pair of layups from Callahan. After a layup from Graf, BU used an 11-0 run, capped by a trey from Callahan with 1:23 remaining to make it a seven-point game, 71-64.
Agboola sank a pair of free throws with 47 seconds on the clock to pull BU within six, but the Terriers were forced to foul and Yale went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch to earn the 78-68 victory.
Next up for the Terriers will be the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge, which features four games in a 10-day span. The first three games will take place this weekend during the campus round hosted by the University of Connecticut. BU will kick off the tournament by facing No. 1 Connecticut on Friday (Nov. 22) at 7:30 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
