INDIANAPOLIS - After winning the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association championship in thrilling fashion, the Boston University women's rowing team learned Tuesday afternoon during the NCAA Division I Rowing Championship Selection Show which squads would join them at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., on May 31 - June 2.
Eleven conferences were awarded automatic qualification and the remaining 11 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the championship field. Teams qualifying for the championship as an automatic qualifier or as an at-large are required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. For the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four races, all 22 boats will be seeded into four heats.
The Terriers will be making their seventh overall appearance (1998-01, 03, 06, 13) at the NCAAs and their first with a full complement of boats since 2001. The varsity eight boat received an at-large bid in 1998, 2003 and 2006.
Winner of five national titles with the last coming in 1992, BU will be seeking its first NCAA trophy in an event that began in 1997.
Back on Sunday, the varsity eight boat defeated defending CAA champion Northeastern by two seconds to clinch the Terriers' automatic NCAA bid. Finishing third at the Eastern Sprints, the crew is seeded 18th and will race in the opening heat on Friday, May 31, against No. 2 Princeton (Ivy League champion), No. 7 UCLA, No. 10 Stanford and No. 15 Brown.
After claiming the silver at the CAAs and the bronze at Sprints, the second varsity eight boat will face No. 2 California, No. 7 Harvard, No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 15 Michigan.
The varsity four boat earned the bronze this past weekend and will enter next week's competition as the No. 19 seed. The Terriers will be joined in the heat by No. 3 Brown, No. 6 Yale, No. 11 Virginia, No. 14 Harvard and No. 22 Marist.
