Sacramento, Calif. - Boston University men's rowing advanced three boats to the semifinals of the 2013 IRA National Championship Regatta Friday afternoon on Lake Natomo in Sacramento, Calif.

The team advanced two of its four boats directly to the semis during the morning competition with the second varsity eight and varsity four boats both finishing second in their heat races. The varsity eight boat provided some drama, needing to win their afternoon repechage race to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

In the Terriers first race of the day, the No. 9 varsity eight boat placed third in its heat behind No. 1 Washington and No. 8 Yale, failing to advance directly to Saturday's semifinals as only the top two boats advanced. Coxed by sophomore Lauren Harvey and stroked by junior Moritz Franz, the V8 boat came back strong in the afternoon, winning its repechage race with a time of 5:54.30, 2.5 seconds ahead of No. 13 Penn and well ahead of No. 19 FIT and No. 23 UCSD.

In its morning heat race, the No. 8 second varsity eight boat overcame an early deficit to catch No. 9 Cornell at the half-way point of the race to finish second behind No. 1 Washington. The second place finish advanced the 2V boat directly to Saturday's semifinals. Coxed by junior Tennyson Hunt and stroked by freshman Matt Maginnis, the 2V posted a time of 5:55.58, just five seconds behind No. 1 seeded Washington.

The varsity four boat, coxed by junior Justin Rau and stroked by senior Todd Sukolsky, advanced directly to the semifinals by way of an impressive second place finish to No. 1 Washington. The Terriers finished with a time of 6:44.49, eight seconds behind The Huskies and of Princeton, MIT and Harvard by open water.

The No. 9 freshman eight boat, coxed by Maggie Read and stroked by Drew Miller, placed fourth in its morning heat in a very tough field, finishing behind No. 4 Brown, No. 3 Cal and  No. 10 Princeton. In the afternoon repechage, the F8 boat needed only to finish in the top 3 of a four boat field but finished last in an extremely tight race in which all four teams finished within four seconds of the winner. No. 12 George Washington won the race with a time of 6:18.70 followed by No. 13 Dartmouth, No. 11 Drexel and BU.

Seeded No. 1 in all of its races, Washington did not disappoint. The Huskies dominated the morning heats, finishing first in all four of its races to advance all their boats directly to Saturday's semifinals and earning  the afternoon off.

Racing will begin again on Lake Natoma Saturday morning with the men's varsity four semifinal competition beginning at 9:45 a.m. PST.
