BOSTON - In a game that featured seven lead changes, the Boston University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a late surge by Lafayette, as the Terriers lost, 68-63, Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. BU moves to 6-11 on the season and 1-3 in Patriot League play while Lafayette snaps a six-game losing streak to move to 7-8 on the year and 1-3 in league action.
Three players tied for the team lead with 12 points for the Terriers, as senior Danielle Callahan registered her first career double-double with 12 points and career-high 11 assists. Fellow senior Rashidat Agboola posted 12 points and five rebounds while sophomore Clodagh Scannell connected on four 3-pointers to total 12 points while leading the team with six rebounds.
Freshman Sarah Hope finished with nine points, all from beyond the arc and senior Whitney Turner also added nine points.
The Leopards had two players reach 20 points and were led by Kelley Loughney's double-double (20 points, 13 rebounds). Emily Horman also added 20 points and six rebounds.
BU finished the game with a 37.3 field goal percentage (22-of-59) and went 10-for-22 (45.5 percent) from beyond the arc with a 75.0 percent (9-of-12) free throw percentage. Lafayette shot 41.3 percent from the field (26-of-63) and went 2-for-14 from the 3-point line (14.3 percent). The Leopards shot 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the charity stripe.
As the top rebounding team in the conference, Lafayette held a 46-32 advantage on rebounds and scored 38 of its points in the paint. The Terriers committed 15 turnovers which the Leopards converted in to 12 points while Lafayette gave the ball up 13 times.
Senior Melissa Gallo got the scoring started for the Terriers with a trey to open the game and BU built an 8-2 lead less than two minutes into the contest. Lafayette cut the lead in half but Turner added a pair of free throws and Hope connected on a long 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to put BU ahead, 13-6.
The Terriers took their largest lead of the half, 20-8, following a trey from Scannell. Lafayette then used a 10-2 run to pull within four points, 22-18, with 7:26 remaining in the half. Callahan hit a shot from outside of the arc to give BU some separation but Horman scored the Leopards' next six points to give Lafayette its first lead of the game, 26-25, with 4:37 to go. BU outscored Lafayette, 10-2, in the remainder of the first half, including a pair of treys from Scannell in the final two minutes to take a 36-28 lead into the break.
The Terriers maintained an eight point lead three minutes into the second half following a jumper from Turner before an 11-3 run by Lafayette evened the game for the second time at 45-45 with 13:15 on the clock. The Leopards took the lead with a layup from Loughney but BU kept pace and knotted the game again.
Agboola hit a pair of shots from the free throw line to give the advantage back to BU, 49-48, and the teams traded the lead on the next few possessions. With the game tied for the sixth time at 54-54 with 6:09 to play, the Leopards used a 6-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the game, 60-54, with 4:04 remaining.
The Terriers used a 3-pointer from Callahan and a jumper from junior Mollie McKendrick to make it a one-possession game. Hope hit a long-range 3-pointer with 27 seconds on the clock to pull BU within one, 64-63, with 27 seconds to play. The Leopards added a pair of free throws before McKendrick missed a shot on the Terriers' last possession. BU was forced to foul and sent Jamie O'Hare to line for a pair of shots with two seconds remaining and she closed out the game for the 68-63 Lafayette victory,
BU will travel to Hamilton, N.Y., on Wednesday (Jan. 15) to take on Colgate. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
