Women's Basketball Falls at Colgate, 81-64

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Boston University women’s basketball team dropped an 81-64 decision at Colgate on Wednesday night at Cotterell Court in Patriot League action. The Terriers fall to 6-12 on the season and 1-4 in conference play while the Raiders move to 5-11 on the year and 1-4 in league play.

Snapping a six-game losing streak, the Raiders earned their first Patriot League win of the season and their second-ever win against the Terriers. BU still leads the all-time series, 5-2.

Sophomore Clodagh Scannell led BU with a career-high 15 points that all came in the second half. The sophomore connected on 3-of-4 of her shots from beyond the arc and went 6-of-7 overall on the night.

Senior Danielle Callahan was second on the team with 11 points while junior Mollie McKendrick added 10 points. Freshman Meghan Green led BU with six rebounds and added six points.

Five players reached double-digits for the Raiders, as Carole Harris led the way with 19 points. Mariah Jones, Catherine Lewis and Missy Repoli added 11 points each while Kelly Reid finished with 10.

After shooting 21.4 percent in the first half, BU shot 55.9 percent in the second half to finish the game with a 40.3 percent clip (25-of-62). The Terriers connected on 8-of-24 shots (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc and went 6-for-10 from the free throw line. Colgate shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the floor and went 11-for-21 from the 3-point line (52.4 percent). The Raiders also converted 8-of-10 opportunities from the charity stripe.

Colgate finished with a 37-31 edge in rebounding and scored 24 points off of 18 BU turnovers. The Raiders committed 17 turnovers on the night.

The Terriers held an early 5-4 lead after a basket from Green before the Raiders tied the game at 5-5 with a free throw from Randyll Butler. A 5-0 run then gave Colgate a 9-5 lead and forced BU to call timeout with 13:49 on the clock. Senior Whitney Turner got on the board with a layup out of the break and McKendrick added a basket to cut the Raiders lead to 13-11.

Colgate then used a 15-0 run over almost six minutes of action to break open the game before a Callahan jumper put BU back on the board with 3:33 to go in the first half. Trailing, 28-13, McKendrick added a pair of free throws but the Raiders closed out the opening half with a 7-1 run to take a 35-16 lead into the break.

Using an 8-0 run to start the second half, Colgate took its largest lead of the night, 43-16, just two minutes into the period. The Terriers responded with a 7-0 run of their own to bring their deficit down to 20, 43-63.

A trey by Scannell brought BU within 17 points and the sophomore went on to score eight of BU’s next 10 points while Green added a layup to make it 59-42 game with 8:46 remaining. Later in the half, Repoli and Scannell traded shots from beyond the arc and McKendrick added a jumper to again pull the Terriers within 17 points with 2:23 to play.

Colgate led by 22 points after a Harris layup with 1:20 on the clock but BU brought the margin down with a pair of triples from Callahan and a free throw from Rashidat Agboola to end the game.

The Terriers return to action on Sunday (Jan. 19) when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on fellow Patriot League newcomer Loyola Maryland. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
