Men's Rowing Opens Season at Textile Regatta on Sunday
October 2, 2014 | Women's Rowing
As part of their preparation for the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta, Boston University’s men's rowing team will participate in the Textile River Regatta in Lowell on Sunday. The team will send out 12 pairs and two singles to race the nearly 4 mile long course.
For the past three weeks, the team’s focus was set on the technical development and conditioning through training in small boats to prepare for racing pieces in eights each Saturday on the Charles River. Besides technical improvements, training and racing in pairs and singles adds to the level of competitiveness on the team and is part of the weekly training with everyone pushing hard to earn seats for the Head of the Charles and the Princeton Chase.
“We are excited to get back on the water this weekend in Lowell,” said men’s rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer. “The Textile Regatta is more of an inter squad race as there are not many programs that enter. We are racing pairs and singles instead of the eights. Small boat training is an integral part of our fall preparation. It will be bragging rights between the squad, and most importantly we will look at the results as part of selection for our Head of the Charles boats.”
The Terriers are coming off a fantastic 2013-2014 campaign that saw BU finish sixth in team points at the IRA National Championship Regatta in June. BU also won the annual IRA Chapman Award given to the team with the largest increase in points over the previous year. In addition to its great success at the IRAs, BU placed all 5 of it boats in the Grand Finals and won its first Eastern Sprints gold medal when the fourth varsity boat won the 4V Grand Final just ahead of BU’s fifth varsity which took home silver.
The Textile River Regatta is a 6k head race held on the Merrimack River each fall. A full range of sculling and sweeps events are included, with boats coming from many local and regional clubs and universities. Each year the event occurs a few weeks prior to the Head of the Charles and provides athletes with a competitive training event.
After the Textile Regatta, the Terriers next compete in the 50th Head of Charles Regatta on Oct. 18-19 with the DeWolfe Boathouse again serving as the starting line. Boston University Rowing will be hosting an Open House for prospects and their families during the Head of the Charles weekend. Attendees will be able to meet with coaching staff, team-members and tour the facility. Open House hours are Saturday, Oct. 18 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
