
Women's Basketball Suffers 67-54 Setback at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Boston University women’s basketball team dropped a 67-54 decision to Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena. BU falls to 8-15 on the season (3-7 Patriot League) while Lehigh moves to 10-11 on the year (3-7 PL).
The Mountain Hawks earned their first win over the Terriers after BU defeated Lehigh, 71-64, in their first meeting this season. BU still leads the all-time series, 4-1.
Senior Danielle Callahan led the Terries with 19 points and added seven assists while classmate Rashidat Agboola posted 10 points and six rebounds. Fellow senior Whitney Turner led the team with nine rebounds while adding five points.
Lehigh snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and was led by Elizabeth Sharlow’s double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds). Sarah Williams was second on the team with 12 points while Kerry Kinek added 11 points.
BU connected on 18-of-56 shots for a 32.1 field goal percentage and went 6-of-22 from beyond the arc (27.3 percent). The Terriers connected on 52.2 percent from the free throw line (12-of-23).
The Mountain Hawks entered the game with the top scoring offense in the conference (72.0 ppg) and shot 24-of-60 from the field (40.0 percent) and 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) from beyond the arc. Lehigh also converted 16-of-24 attempts from the charity stripe.
The battle on the boards belonged to Lehigh, who ended the game with a 50-37 advantage.
The Terriers started 3-for-3 to take an early 6-0 lead before a pair of 3-pointers for Lehigh tied the game at 6-6. Agboola broke the knot and Callahan hit a pair of triples to give BU a 16-8 lead with 14:09 remaining in the first half. Lehigh began to chip away at BU’s lead and used a three-point play from Lindsay Hoskins to cut the deficit to 18-15.
BU went almost nine minutes without hitting a field goal, allowing Lehigh to take the lead. Freshman Sarah Hope hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe and a trey from sophomore Clodagh Scannell put BU back on the board and tied the game at 23-23 with 4:53 to go before the half.
Lehigh used a 6-1 run to regain the lead and freshman Meghan Green added a basket in the final seconds to send the teams into the break with the Mountain Hawks ahead, 29-27.
Agboola tied the game on BU’s first possession of the second half but Lehigh responded with an 8-1 run to take a 37-30 lead. Turner got BU back on the board with a layup while Callahan and fellow senior Melissa Gallo knocked down a pair of triples to make it a three-point game, 41-38, with 12:33 to play.
The Mountain Hawks used a 6-1 spurt to lengthen their lead while Callahan converted a three-point play to bring BU’s deficit to five, 47-42, with 7:59 to go. The Terriers kept it a two-possession game over the next few minutes until a 3-pointer from Katie O’Reilly put the Mountain Hawks ahead by nine, with 3:10 to go. Williams followed with a layup to put the margin at double-digits but Hope hit a trey to bring it to 60-52 with 2:42 to play.
Lehigh converted 7-of-10 attempts from the free throw line to close out the game and secure its 67-54 victory.
BU will return to Case Gym on Wednesday (Feb. 5) to host Navy. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
