Seniors Rich Peters and Monica Adler will each compete at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend, hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Both athletes will go for a national title in the mile while Peters is also slated to race in the 3,000m event on Saturday. Both the men's and women's semifinals in the mile will kick off Friday's track schedule at 8 p.m. ET. The men's race will be first, followed by the women's competition at 8:15 p.m.
Peters, the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, is in the second of two heats in the mile and has the second-fastest time among the eight athletes he will run against. His school-record time of 3:57.27 is behind only Anthony Rotuch of UTEP (3:55.86) in heat two and Peters has the sixth-best mile of the 16 competitors in Albuquerque. His best finish at the NCAA Championships was in 2012 when he finished runner-up in the mile.
Adler will also run in the second heat of the women's semifinal against primarily SEC athletes; she is one of just three runners in her heat to not hail from an SEC school. She will make her debut at the NCAA Championships after her personal-best time of 4:36.35 in the mile at the BU Last Chance Meet on March 2. That mark was just shy of the school record of 4:35.65 set by Jennifer Lanctot at the 1991 national championships.
On Saturday, Peters will hope to be one of 10 athletes competing in the final of the mile at 8 p.m. ET. He will then take part in the 3,000m run for the first time at the NCAA Championships at 9:40 p.m. ET. His time of 7:52.61 broke a 27-year old school record.
