WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston University softball team jumped out of the gate with five runs and never allowed Holy Cross room to breathe in a 11-1 romp on Sunday afternoon at Freshman Field. Scoring 10 or more runs for the sixth time this season, the Terriers improve to 20-18 and 5-4 in Patriot League play, while the Crusaders fell to 7-16 (5-4 PL).
Eight Terriers contributed to BU's total of 14 hits with freshman Brittany Younan and junior Mandy Fernandez both going a perfect 3-of-3. They combined for five runs scored and three RBIs. Senior Amy Ekart posted her 20th career homer, and classmate Chelsea Kehr contributed two RBIs and two runs scored.
Sophomore Lauren Hynes (13-12) collected the win by limiting Holy Cross to two hits and one unearned run through three innings of work. Sophomore Melanie Russell then struck out five of six Crusaders in the final two innings.
HC's Gennifer Durham (3-9) went the distance in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Terriers and allowed just five hits. In the second go-around, BU pasted her with seven runs off eight hits in just two innings.
BU opened with four doubles in the first inning by Younan, Kehr, Hynes and junior Mandy Fernandez. Ekart then delivered a crushing blow with a homer to right center to give BU a 5-0 lead.
The Terriers added six runs over the next three innings before finally being shut out in the fifth.
Snapping a four-game losing streak, BU will next return home and host Massachusetts on Tuesday (April 15) at 4 p.m.
