PROVIDENCE, R.I -
During their recent visit to Providence, R.I. to compete in the Brown Bear Invitational, the Boston University golf team also competed in a very different type of competition. The Terriers finished in first place at the Blessings in a Backpack food drive by donating the most food to the nationally recognized non-profit organization over the weekend.
Blessings in a BackPack's mission is to help feed at risk elementary school children. Through food drives, the organization collects easy-to-prepare, ready-to-eat items such as fruit snacks, granola bars, cheese and crackers, pretzels and mac and cheese. Elementary schoolchildren who are on the Federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program are then given a backpack of the food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year because “Hunger Doesn't Take Weekends Off”.
The non-profit is currently feeding over 63,000 children in 583 schools in 45 states.
